Legislative Hallways
There are long
legislative hallways on each side of the Chambers. They are furnished with 1910 original
pieces of furniture. The purpose of the hallways is to provide a private relaxing space
away from the general public during the Legislative Session. In South Dakota, the
Legislative Session always commences on the second Tuesday of January. In odd-numbered
years the Session runs for 40 days and in even-numbered years it runs for 35 days. Special
Sessions may be called by the Governor or by two-thirds of both houses of the Legislature.
The most
recent Special Sessions were held in September 1994, March 1997,
December 2000, October 2001, June 2003 and October 2005. Another special
session had been requested by the Governor in November 2006, but it was
called off.
